What is a DNS leak?
DNS translates domain names into network addresses. When you use a VPN, you may expect those lookups to follow the VPN's intended DNS path. A DNS leak can occur when requests unexpectedly use a resolver outside that path.
Why resolver names can be confusing
A resolver belonging to a different company does not automatically mean your DNS is leaking. VPNs, ISPs and third-party DNS services can use upstream or shared infrastructure. That is why NetPrivacyScan reports the observed resolvers and uses cautious conclusions.
Best interpretation: compare the observed resolvers with what your VPN or network configuration says should be used.
How to test
- Connect to the network or VPN you want to check.
- Open the main scanner and run the DNS Leak Test.
- Review each resolver and its reported operator or location.
- If something is unexpected, compare it with your VPN's DNS documentation before calling it a leak.
